As Claudius became emperor in the year A.D 270 he decreed married men too emotionally attached to their families thus making them them poor soldiers. To assure quality warriors he banned marriage. It was at this time St. Valentine, a bishop living near Rome, began to meet with young lovers in secret places joining them in the sacrament of matrimony. For this he was jailed and sentenced to death. While Valentine was in prison awaiting his fate he came in contact with a prison guard named Asterius, the father of a blind girl. Asterius begged St. Valentine to heal his daughter. Through his faith Valentine miraculously restored her sight. Just before his execution, he asked for a pen and paper from the guard, signing his farewell message to her "From Your Valentine". On February 24, A.D 270, Valentine was executed. He died a martyr for his faith in the beauty of marriage.
